- Kamala Devi Harris was born on October 20, 1964, in Oakland, California. She was the eldest of two. Her mother, Shyamala Gopalan, was a cancer researcher hailing from India, while her father Donald Harris, was a Jamaican economist.
- The name Kamala had been chosen by her mother Shyamala Gopalan, which means “lotus”, the Hindu goddess “Laxmi”, and the empowerment of women.
