The first woman vice president of the USA,Kamala Harris, has spent a decent amount of time of her life in the public sphere. She was the first black woman to be elected as District Attorney General for California. She was the first Indian American Senator, and now the first Asian black woman to hold the position of vice-president of the USA.

• Kamala Devi Harris was born on October 20, 1964, in Oakland, California. She was the eldest of two. Her mother, Shyamala Gopalan, was a cancer researcher hailing from India, while her father Donald Harris, was a Jamaican economist. 
• The name Kamala had been chosen by her mother Shyamala Gopalan, which means “lotus”, the Hindu goddess “Laxmi”, and the empowerment of women. 
• Kamala was brought up on the top floor of a yellow duplex in Berkley by her mother as her parents got divorced when she was just 7. 
• Kamala has embraced her multi-cultural identity. She used to visit the Black Baptist church and Hindu temples as well. Shyamala wanted to raise both Kamala and Maya as confident black women who are independent. 
• Kamala’s grandfather was a freedom fighter, and her grandmother was an activist who educated impoverished women about birth control. Once when Kamala visited India during her childhood, she was interested and influenced by both her grandfather and grandmother’s work in the public sphere. 
• Kamala has completed her middle and high school in Montreal where her mother worked as a teacher at McGill University and later as a cancer researcher in Jewish General Hospital. 
• When she was 13-years-old, Harris has led a successful demonstration in front of her apartment in Montreal along with her younger sister, Maya, against a policy forbidding the children from playing on the lawn. 
• Harris has majored in Political science and economics from Howard University, Washington D.C.
• Kamala Harris has passed the bar in 1990 and joined Alameda County Prosecutor’s office, Oakland as an assistant district attorney focusing on sex crimes.

As soon as she took charge of her office, she started taking action on teenage prostitution. In 2003, Kamala’s elite and influential friends gave her financial backing to make her a potential candidate for her campaign for the office. 
• In 2003, she ran for district attorney against her former boss Terence Hallinan and won with 56.5% votes polled. She was the first woman to the office of the district attorney of California.

• The year 2004 was the year of controversy for Harris when she declined to pursue the death penalty against the man who murdered a police officer in San Francisco.
